Make sure it is secure on all sides to keep out would-be predators such as foxes or weasels. 15mm square wire is ideal size wire mesh to stop predators reaching in to your coop.

The surrounding area of your coop needs wire mesh protection also. Ideally this needs to be buried at least 35cm below ground level to prevent rats from burrowing down and inside you coop.

Good ventilation inside your coop is essential to prevent respiratory diseases. Although chickens can stand cold weather they can not withstand being in the direct path of the wind. One long standing arguement has always been between the need for a chicken coop at all. Some people believe that chickens respond better and live longer in the open air, while others believe that chickens housed solely outside develop and become prone to illness and disease. This has led to the developement of closed house coops (that have windows, hatches and doors that can be closed off from the elements) and open-air coops (constructed mainly of wire mesh).

To make it less back breaking for you, your coop should be designed to make it easy to clean.

Roosting poles are a must. That is where your bird will sleep, so make sure there is ample space so the chickens are not crowded or bunched up together.

One nest box between four birds is more than enough. These should be placed in the dark recesses of the coop in order to encourage your birds to lay. Always keep nesting boxes raised off the floor , but lower than the roosting poles.

Your coop should be large enough to give each chicken at least 4 square feet to move around in.

There should always be a place for water and feed inside your coop.

When choosing wood for your coop, always try to get longer or bigger than stated in your plan as all lumber needs to be sanded clean to begin with.
